I think Southwold must be the bench capital of the world. There are over 150 of them in the town - all lovingly placed, inscribed, looked after and loved!
I have lived in Southwold for over 12 years - which doesn't quite make me a local yet - but several years ago now it did give me a wonderful opportunity to write a book about the inscriptions on lots of them - and what stories they have to tell.
With the first bench arriving in Southwold in 1886 they can now be found in all corners of the town - singularly or in groups - overlooking the sea, harbour and fine views of the common, golf course and green open spaces. They provide a perfect space to sit and are often placed in requested designated spots. Washed, varnished and mended they used to be taken into storage every winter but are now left outside to face the elements and provide all year round seating for the many thousands of visitors to this wonderful seaside town, with its award-winning pier, working harbour, brewery, teashops, open greens and surrounding protected 130 acres of common land.
And the stories? Well they are simply wonderful. When I started my research for the book I didn't realise how heart warming and heart wrenching they would be. They tell of life, loved ones, favoured pets and past and present lives. There is both humour and sadness - and it is impossible to sit down and not think of the person's story inscribed on the wood behind you.
With over 25 all-page stories, photos and illustrations, there is even one bench included that is dedicated to Michael Palin's mum. Also included is the history of how and where the benches are made and also favourite benches and their inscriptions. Price £4.99p plus p&p.
Also available is a book I have researched written on the stories behind the names of the famous 'Southwold Beach Huts' (£4.99p plus p&p) - and to complete the set there is also a book called Plaques - the stories behind the plaques on Southwold Pier (£3.99p plus p&p). All tell remarkable stories.

As a special offer to this website you can buy all three books for just £10 plus p&p and I would be happy to sign the books if you would like that too.
