Benches at Qumran, Dead Sea viewing point - ref. VFB_0019
A modern version of a bedouin tent with benches which provide great views towards the Dead Sea and the mountains of Jordan, plus views of the hills and caves of Qumran.
How to get there:
Qumran visitors centre is not far from Jericho and very near the Dead Sea
Amenities: Good restaurant at Qumran visitors centre.
Access: Quite good access from visitors centre, suitable for able-bodied people and children.
Unusual features or other information: Very interesting historical site describing how a strict Jewish sect (the Essenes) lived over 2000 years ago. The remains of their original dwellings have been uncovered and are able to be visited. The site has recently become a tourist attraction because of the ancient hand-written scrolls (Dead Sea scrolls) which were accidently discovered in nearby caves by a shepherd boy in 1947.
