Beddgelert, North Wales - ref. VFB_0095
An unusual bench which commemorates a famous hound!
How to get there: Beddgelert is a lovely village located just south of Snowdon in North West Wales. From Caernarfon, take the A4085 south east and this takes you into Beddgelert, a distance of about 12 miles. From the centre of the village follow the footpath along the banks of the Glaslyn leading to Beddgelert's most famous historical feature, 'Gelert's Grave'. This bench, which is located along the tow path, looks towards the hills and the famous grave. Locate the bench on a detailed map here.
Amenities: Toilets and plenty of tea shops in the village.
Access: Good access along a short walk south out of the village. Suitable for disabled users.
Unusual features or other information: The story is told of Prince Llewelyn ap Iorwerth who had a faithful hound called Gelert who saved his son from being attacked by a wolf. The story is probably a fable made up by traders to lure visitors to Snowdon into their small village. It appears that the name of the town actually comes from the name of a 6th Century saint. The supposed tomb of Gelert stands in a beautiful meadow below Cerrig Llan.
